Zen Garden

Remote-controlled audio-visual interaction

Project Overview

Background

This is a university group project of designing a remote controlled interaction. The design implements MQTT protocol, allowing users to use their smartphone as a sender to send message, and the display screen will receive message to generate visual and acoustic output based on the message.

The Problem

Although people have enjoyed the convenience through the process of urbanisation, the expansion of cities has led to higher stress levels among residents. The fast pace of modern life leaves little room for relaxation, self-reflection, and introspection, thus entrapping individuals in the monotonous cycle of daily routines.

Design Solution

Our design concept takes its initial inspiration from Zen Garden. We aim to create a relaxing and peaceful oasis in the midst of the urban context, where users have an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature in its dynamic and serene state and interact from their mobile device.

The aesthetic of the design was inspired by the traditional ink paintings. While the form is often not as accurate, the brushstrokes imbuing the paintings with energy and reflect the painter’s emotions and inner-state. Ancient Chinese artists believed that “no creation of art without peace of soul”, which perfectly match with the intention of our design.

User Guide

Drag

When user drag fingers across the mobile interface, an ink painting consistent with the user’s sliding path will be generated. At the same time, flowers will be generated on the display screen in accordance with the user’s drawing gesture. Along with each flower, a random note will be played, creating a generative harmonious melody.

Tap

Tapping on the mobile interface will create an outward-spreading ink ripple from the touch spot. While on the display screen, the flowers previously created will spread out from the centre of the ripple, creating the effect of being pushed away by water ripples. A soothing sound effect will be triggered with the ripple.

Application Scenario

Office Lounge

The envisioned application scenarios of this design are public indoor screens with a relatively quiet surrounding. Office lounge is a good sample location.

Office workers often experience high levels of work stress that may lead to health problems. It has been indicated that incorporating natural elements into workspace design helps to increase the engagement and positive emotions of workspace users. Our design provides a peaceful experience in nature, which allows users just simply interact by mobile phones to enjoy a moment of freshness while taking a short break - or even when waiting for the elevator.
